The fourth year ("4ème année") is a specialization period qui can be taken in France or abroad. Several possibilities exist: :
- specialization in a "Corps de l'Etat,"
- engineer training,
- Master degree,
- PhD thesis

This specialization period represents a full part of the studentship at the Ecole Polytechnique. It is carried out under its administrative and pedagogical supervision (except for the "Coprs de l'Etat").

The specialization is composed of a two-semester lectures period providing a diploma followed by a one-semester internship in an industrial company or a research laboratory.
