The thematic cluster "Optics, Lasers and Plasmas" rounds up many themes that are explored, as well experimentally as theoretically, both in the laboratories of Polytechnique (LOA, LOB, LULI, LLR, LPI, LSI, CPHT) and in nearby associated institutes (ILE, IOGS). The content of this theme is taught in the "Programme d'Approfondissement (PA)" of the Physics Department. The research in optics ranges from optical instrumentation to atomic optics or lasers of ultra-high intensity. The physics of lasers and of associated materials also occupies an important place, with a wide variety of applications including for example the exploration of biological material, or of the properties of vacuum through "extreme light". Electromagnetic waves can also produce or heat plasmas, with applications ranging from the fabrication, processing and study of materials to controlled fusion (magnetic or inertial), and from particle accelerators to astrophysics.
